Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered all Californians to wear face masks while in public including when shopping, taking public transit or seeking medical care. The increase in coronavirus cases has been caused by Californians failing to voluntarily take that precaution. The recent Black Lives Matter protests are also thought to have caused a spike in cases in The Golden State.
“Simply put, we are seeing too many people with faces uncovered putting at risk the real progress we have made in fighting the disease. California’s strategy to restart the economy and get people back to work will only be successful if people act safely and follow health recommendations. That means wearing a face mask, washing your hands and practicing physical distancing.” Gavin Newsom said.
Masks must be worn by Californians:
- in their workplace
- when serving customers or any member of the public
- by all food service workers
- when working or walking through hallways and parking facilities
- when riding on elevators, according to the order.
- who drive buses, taxis, ride-hailing vehicles or any other service that accepts passengers also must wear masks.
Many Californians have rebelled against directives to wear face masks and in doing so have helped to spread the virus and put further pressure on hospitals. They consider orders like those from Gavin Newsom to be government overreach and an infringement of their personal freedom. There are many words and expletives that can be aimed at these selfish people but we think sometimes one image can speak louder than words. Bruce Plante's cartoon The Protesters nails it!
