Facebook sucks. It has for many years. It has been proven to sell our information to our friends by putting our face on products without telling us. The more we use it, the more they use and abuse us. The New York Times and BBC exposed Facebook's data sharing deals with companies like Amazon, Yahoo and Huawei.
So just when the Californian company has the opportunity to do something right and clear their name, they blow it again. Facebook has banned ads and commerce listings for face masks amid growing concern over coronavirus-related exploitation. They have also banned all groups that sell face masks and any PPE.
“We’re monitoring COVID19 closely and will make necessary updates to our policies if we see people trying to exploit this public health emergency,” said Director of Product Management at Facebook Rob Leathern. An interesting spin during the worst pandemic we have experienced in our lifetime.
What might have been more appropriate would have been if Rob had delivered,
"We are using our social media platform to finally do something ethically correct and support Americans, frontline workers and families. We are making it easier for PPE suppliers to reach these people."
Rob's Twitter profile reads, "Working on trust for ads and business products." Time to work harder Rob!
The ad ban has also been enforced by Instagram, a company that is now owned by Facebook. “Supplies are short, prices are up, and we’re against people exploiting this public health emergency,” tweeted Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram. Again, the key line there is "supplies are short." Take the hint Adam. People need to be supplied. Why stop this happening?! Talk about inaction and letting down 330 million Americans.
